The Judy Wilkenfeld Award for International Tobacco Control Excellence

The Judy Wilkenfeld Award for International Tobacco Control Excellence

Nominations Being Accepted Until February 15, 2008

When Judy Wilkenfeld died on May 24, 2007, the world lost more than one of its most important tobacco control leaders. Judy’s contributions to tobacco control were extraordinary, but Judy Wilkenfeld was also unique in the respect with which she treated all of her colleagues and the ways she brought people together, made everyone with whom she came into contact better and served as a mentor and role model to so many.

Judy contributed to the effort to reduce the death toll from tobacco use for more than 20 years, first as a public official and then as an advocate and the leader of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids international efforts. At the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, Judy participated in every Framework Convention on Tobacco Control negotiating session between 1999 and 2003, and played an integral role in the emergence of the Framework Convention Alliance, the first truly international alliance of non-governmental organizations in support of tobacco control that includes more than 300 organizations from all over the world.

Judy’s expertise and devotion changed the world of tobacco control for the better, but Judy’s impact goes far beyond her professional achievements. It is for this reason that the Campaign is pleased to announce the creation of a new award in Judy’s name. The Judy Wilkenfeld Award for International Tobacco Control Excellence will be given to the international advocate who has both contributed the most to the battle to reduce tobacco use and done the most to bring people together and inspire others to support these efforts.

The Campaign is establishing a small distinguished panel of international experts to participate in the selection process along with Campaign staff, representatives of the Framework Convention Alliance and members of Judy’s family.

Top priority in selecting the Judy Wilkenfeld Award winner will be given to the nominee who, like Judy, best exemplifies the following traits:

· Exhibits utmost respect in honoring the diversity of the different members of the tobacco control community;

· Works to build consensus and bring people together;

· Serves as a mentor and/or role model for others in the movement; and

· Both has an established record of achievement and demonstrates the potential to be a future leader.

The Judy Wilkenfeld award will be presented at the Campaign’s annual Youth Advocates of the Year Awards Gala. In 2008, the Gala will be held on May 20, 2008. The awardee will be flown to Washington, DC, for this event and will also receive a monetary award as a part of this honor.
